Terra Incognita: a land art exhibition

Terra Incognita was an interdisciplinary, site-specific land art exhibition featuring over twenty-five talented artists on the 4.5-acre private site of The Verdancy Project in August 2023. The exhibition ran for two deeply immersive weekends of artist-led engagement with land and environment, stewardship, and beauty. Visitors embarked on an intimate journey of discovery of art hidden in woodlands, fields, ponds, gardens, and creeks.

With the starting point of terra incognita or “unknown territory” – referring to both land or mental exploration – the artists were invited to conceive new works inspired by and/or integrated into this landscape. Keeping in mind their role as stewards of the land, the artists use natural and sustainable materials to creatively chart new territory, enchanting and surprising viewers. The resulting artworks were immersive and intimate activations of the land, water, and trees, through built earthworks, installations, sculptures, sound installations, performance art, and more. Visitors were invited to come and be inspired, challenged, and delighted.

Terra Incognita was co-curated and produced by Shannon Amidon, Lauren Carrera, Merridawn Duckler, Kendra Roberts, and Joellen Sweeney.
